To honor the 343 members of the FDNY who perished in the attacks of September 11, 2001, my concept is to create a National Firefighters Memorial Sanctuary. As one element of the larger commemoration of this tragic event, the Sanctuary would contain a linear procession of cast glass ladders and buckets, flanked by a moving channel of water drawn from the Hudson River Estuary. Water, both cleansing and nourishing the site, flows alongside the series of glowing, diaphanous, elemental, glass objects that evoke the fragility of daily risk. This future contemplative public space could serve as a gathering site for memorial events including an annual roll call paying tribute to each individual fallen firefighter.

The other essential component of the Memorial is the issuing of Firefighters Commemorative Stamps, to be collaboratively designed with the FDNY. These stamps will serve as a daily reminder of the sacrifices that the firefighters and their families live with in the name of public service. Through their circulation, the stamps will also enable the direct participation of the world"’"s citizens in the healing process, as well creating a democratic funding method for the building of the memorial.

The National Firefighters Memorial Sanctuary and Commemorative Stamp Project, will commemorate and honor the sacrifice of those who perished.
