The Buffalo Syndrome is sited on a short stretch of the abandoned Customs Road on the dramatic Niagara Gorge. The row of stacks follows the contour of the road.

The source of the ideas and images that converge for me in this installation are diverse: the smokestacks are icons for much of the industry in the region, Sergei Eisenstein*’"s historical epic Alexander Nevsky, The 13th Century Battle of the Ice, Russians defeat the heavily armored Tueton Knights.

The Tin Man"’"s journey to the Emerald City to request a heart from the wizard of oz, in L. Frank Baum"’"s The Wizard of Oz.
