Breaching the Gap, 1981 Subtitle"—"Fall of The Macedonian Phalanx/For the Tin Man ArtPark, Lewiston, NY The Buffalo Syndrome is sited on a short stretch of the abandoned Customs Road on the dramatic Niagara Gorge. The row of stacks follows the contour of the road. The source of the ideas and images that converge for me in this installation are diverse: the smokestacks are icons for much of the industry in the region, Sergei Eisenstein*’"s historical epic Alexander Nevsky, The 13th Century Battle of the Ice, Russians defeat the heavily armored Tueton Knights.
